Learning about ways on how to use a firearm safely and effectively will pay off if you're ever in a situation where your life depends on your shooting skill. Having rigid training will also let you learn about the most important things so you can manage to avoid future mistakes that are associated with holding a gun. The following are helpful tips on how you can improve your self-defense handgun skills.

1.    Grab a course about basic pistol.

In this course, you are going to learn about important safety rules. You will also learn more about proper gun handling and the different types of pistols. Each one has their own mechanical and handling characteristics, so you have to be very careful in the way you handle a tool. Even if you have some experience with firearms, it's a good idea to take a course like this is a refresher. After all, there is always something to learn, and you should not miss the opportunity to learn things that you have to know.

2.    Pursue a do-it-yourself course that helps you develop your shooting skills.

This is a good chance for you to enjoy a series of challenges and you will never have to shed a lot of cash. You may only pay for the gun shooting range fees and whatever you spend on paper targets.

3.    Take an advanced self defense course.

You may have managed to learn about the basics but you have to be aware that such is only the beginning.  It is a good thing that you have learned the things you knew now, but constantly challenging yourself will be a great help in the improvement of your shooting skills. Taking an advanced self defense course will allow you to draw from concealment, fire at moving targets, engage in multiple targets and a lot more. At the more progressive levels, you can learn shooting in low light, moving around corners, partner drills, and other skills.

4.    Practice dry fire at your home.

It is a dangerous thing to discharge a firearm within city limits so you may consider a dry run instead. This is the best thing to do on days when you cannot make it to the gun range. You just have to make sure that your gun is unloaded. With a paper target, you are good to go. However, there are a variety of lasers, electronic targets, and other nifty gadgets than can help make dry fire more enjoyable.
